Mechanical Evaluations

  • Mechanical evaluations posts are about putting it all together.
  • They will discuss parts of specific games, and evaluating them from a game design theorist's perspective.
  • Some posts will be like miniature case studies, examining specific and outstanding examples of good, bad, or ugly applications of game design theory. T
  • These will usually focus on game mechanics such as punishment/reward systems, difficulty curves, miscellaneous and specific balancing measures,or even entire game play systems, like Dark Souls' game's combat system.
  •  I will evaluate the aspects of these designs that make them effective or ineffective, in light of the concepts discussed in the "Science" section: challenge, failure, and reward.
